A veteran bikie boss remains in a critical but stable condition and his brother has died after they were gunned down in a Western Sydney gym last night.
Comanchero kingpin Tarek Zahed and his brother Omar sustained multiple gunshot wounds when they were hit with a hail of bullets at Bodyfit Fitness Centre, in Auburn, just after 8pm.
Police sources say a large bounty had been placed on Tarek's head, and he had recently been warned his life was in danger.
The men were treated at the scene, with Omar, 39, shot multiple times in the arms, stomach and legs before going into cardiac arrest and dying.
His older brother Tarek, 41, was shot up to 10 times, including in the head.
He was taken to Westmead Hospital and is in a stable condition after undergoing surgery.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told Nine radio this morning that 30 officers would be added to Sydney's gang-fighting squad Strike Force Raptor in response to the street violence.
"The community has had enough … we just have to keep tackling this," she said.
Commissioner Webb said Tarek Zahed was living in Victoria and was visiting NSW when he was shot, despite being warned of the threats to his life.
"These people think they're invincible and larger than life … the life of crime is not worth it," she said.
The Raptor Squad last year joined a wider squad, Strike Force Hawke, to tackle spiralling Western Sydney gang violence.
Police said Strike Force Leary had been established today to investigate last night's shooting, and monitor criminal networks and their associates.
Authorities described the scene at the gym as "horrific and confronting".
"When we arrived on scene, both patients had suffered significant blood loss and one of them had gone into traumatic cardiac arrest," NSW Ambulance Inspector Kevin McSweeney said.
"There was multiple gunshot wounds all over their bodies. Paramedics did everything they could, but despite best efforts he died at the scene.
"This was an horrific and confronting scene that unfolded in front of several witnesses. It is very fortunate no other members of the public were injured."
Detectives are investigating whether two Audi Q7 cars which were set alight in the south-west Sydney suburbs of Berala and Greenacre are connected to the shooting.
A witness said he saw a person near one of the vehicles when it was torched.
"I think someone threw something in there and, boom, off it goes. The flames were out of control, yeah, they were out of control," the man said.
Last night's shootings came after underworld crime figure Mahmoud "Brownie" Ahmad was gunned down late last month.
The 39-year-old, who had a $1 million bounty on his head, was killed after leaving an associate's home at about 9:30pm at Greenacre.
Ahmad had recently served jail time over the fatal shooting of a man outside a Condell Park smash repair shop in 2016.
After his death, police vowed to step up efforts to crack down on gang violence.
As part of these operations, Tarek Zahed was arrested earlier this month and charged with two counts of contravening a serious crime prevention order which was placed on him in December.
He was due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, June 22.
The order required him to report when he would visit NSW, his residence and reason for his visit and prohibited him from wearing bikie colours and related jewellery.
Police investigations into last night's shooting are continuing.
There are diversions in place on Parramatta Road at Auburn and people have been advised to avoid the area.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
