Two men arrested over Mejid Hamzy shooting murder in Condell Park

Two people charged over 2020 murder of Mejid Hamzy

Two men accused of firing a volley of bullets that killed underworld figure Mejid Hamzy have been arrested after police raided four homes across Sydney.

The father, 44, was shot dead outside his Condell Park home on October 19, 2020 — an execution that sparked the city's deadly gang war.

Two men, Chris O'Brien and Bryce Williams, were arrested after early morning raids in Panania and East Hills before being taken to Bankstown Police Station, where they were charged with murder and drug supply offences.

One of them is known as "Mr Blonde" who was caught on CCTV leaving Simmat Avenue shortly after the ambush, sources told the ABC.

A number of other arrests were made in Bankstown and Padstow in what detectives have described as a "covert high-risk operation"

Police believe a high-profile Comanchero living in the Middle East hired hitmen to kill Hamzy over a large shipment of drugs.

Detectives admit his death sparked the ongoing gangland war with rival family the Alameddines but say they were not behind the shooting.

Sources close to the investigation have revealed Hamzy stole a shipment of 400 kilograms of cocaine from international criminals, who ordered his execution.

Criminal groups squad commander Detective Superintendent Grant Taylor said the arrests were the result of a two-year secret operation involving the NSW Crime Commission and other law enforcement agencies.

"We will be alleging that the murder of Mejid Hamzy was sanctioned at the highest levels of international organised crime," he said.

"The motivation of this murder today relates to the alleged theft of a large importation of narcotics that entered this country."

Detectives arrested Ezzedine Omar, 38, and Mohammed Omar, 44, over their alleged involvement in July last year.

They both remain before the courts.

Mejid Hamzy was the older brother of former Brothers 4 Life gang leader Bassam Hamzy — who is serving time for murder in Goulburn Supermax.

Police allege his death fuelled tensions between the Hamzy and Alameddine crime networks.

Seven men have been killed in the ongoing war — including Mejid and Bassam Hamzy's brother Ghassan Amoun — who was shot dead on a street in Wentworthville in January.

His cousin, Bilal Hamze, was fatally shot outside a Japanese restaurant in Sydney's CBD in June 2021.

Mejid Hamzy's mother Lola Hamzy said she was "happy" about the new arrests but that she had "lost in the end".

"I feel alright but my son is not coming back," she said.

Police released CCTV to try and track down Mejid Hamzy's killers. (News Video)
