Two men have been arrested in connection to the fatal assault of Alan Bourke in Limerick last week.

Alan Bourke, 48, from St Mary’s Park, was found with critical injuries at Colbert Station Plaza, Parnell Street, Limerick City, around 10.25pm on April 15.

The two men aged in their mid and late 30s were arrested in connection with the assault on Friday afternoon.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí investigating the fatal assault of a man (late 40s) that occurred at Parnell Street, Limerick on Friday 15th April, 2022 have arrested two men this afternoon Friday 22nd April, 2022.

“Both men (mid 30s & late 30s) are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Roxboro Road Garda station and Henry Street Garda station.”

It is understood that Mr Bourke sustained a fatal blow to his head. However gardai declined to release details of a post mortem conducted by the State pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collis.

The father of two was buried on Friday and was remembered for his “great sporting life”, as he played soccer and rugby for Ireland.

Fr Gerard O’Leary, parish priest at St Mary’s Church, told mourners Mr Bourke was regarded as a top-class sportsman, excelling at soccer, rugby and handball. His soccer boots and his international and club jerseys were laid beside his coffin at the church altar.

Representatives from local sporting clubs, friends and neighbours attended the funeral Mass.

Mr Bourke was formerly a manager with a tool and machinery hire company and had recently returned to Limerick after living in Co Cork.
