Gardai have arrested two men in connection with the death of a man who was killed after being struck by his own car as he tried to intercept thieves.
Car sales manager Ian McDonnell, 50, died after he sustained serious injuries from being carried a distance on the bonnet of the car as the robbers tried to escape.
The incident occurred on Robinhood Road, Clondalkin, Co. Dublin, on January 23.
The father of three was found lying on the ground after he tried to stop the men from stealing his grey coloured Volkswagon Passat and was rushed to Tallaght University Hospital in serious condition.
He later died from his injuries.
Investigating gardai arrested two men aged in their 20s on Wednesday.
The men are currently being detained at garda stations in the Soth West Dublin area.
A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí investigating a fatal incident that occurred on Robinhood Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, on Sunday evening 23rd January, 2022, have arrested two men today, Wednesday 16th February 2022. The men, both aged in their 20s are currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Garda stations in the South West Dublin area.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
Gardai at Ballyfermot had previously said “significant progress” had been made in the case after a team was established under a senior investigating officer.
Officers made the arrests after gathering evidence from witnesses, examining CCTV footage, and conducting door-to-door inquiries.
The stolen Volkswagon Passat was located by gardai on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin, and underwent a forensic examination.
A second, a silver-coloured Toyota Aqua with the registration number 152 D 32687, which was also involved in the incident, was discovered burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght.
The Toyota Aqua was stolen in Crumlin on the day Ian was killed.
