Two Man City legends named in Premier League Hall of Fame

Manchester City icons Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany are to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame was established in 2021 as a way for the Premier League to recognise and celebrate the 'exceptional skill and talent of individuals who have graced the Premier League since its inception.' It's now the highest individual accolade that the league awards to players.

Eight former players are welcomed into the Hall of Fame every year and six more inductees have now been confirmed after it had already been announced that Wayne Rooney and Patrick Vieira were to be honoured. Joining the duo will be City's first representatives in heroic captain Kompany and legendary striker Aguero.

As well as the Blues duo, another two Manchester United players will be added in Paul Scholes and Peter Schmeichel, Ian Wright will also represent Arsenal while Chelsea's Didier Drogba rounds out the inductees. The players were selected by the public, through an online vote, and the Premier League Awards Panel.

On his induction, Aguero, responsible for perhaps the most iconic moment in the Premier League's history, said: “Since I was nine or 10 years old, I wanted to play in the Premier League. I think it is the best league in the world, where the football is fast and beautiful and the atmosphere is always incredible.

“Entering the Hall of Fame makes me happy for myself and for my family. My son can say that is something his father has achieved. I just loved playing football here with Manchester City and the memories of winning the Premier League five times, including the most important goal of my career to win that first one. I miss my team-mates and the fans a lot still now.”

“I feel that I found a home at Manchester City and in the Premier League so I am delighted to be joining the Hall of Fame," Kompany, who captained City to four league triumphs, added. “I came to love the club and I think the biggest achievement of my career was to be a part of such an incredible journey, where we progressed from a side without high expectations to become a dominant force and champions four times.”

The inductees will be formally honoured at an event in London on Thursday night. All will receive a medallion engraved with their name and the year of their induction as well as a £10,000 donation to a charity of their choice from the Premier League.

The eight players will be joining Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Dennis Bergkamp, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer in the Hall of Fame.
