Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants and a civilian were killed during an anti-militancy operation in south Kashmir’s Shopian on Friday.
“During the house-to-house searches, which were started in the early hours to locate terrorists in the area, the hiding terrorists came out and resorted to indiscriminate firing. In the indiscriminate firing , a civilian, Shakeel Ahmed Khan from Amshipora, got seriously wounded and succumbed,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar said.
According to the police, a joint operation was launched at Amshipora on Thursday night “based on a specific input of the police about the presence of terrorists”.
“After a cluster of houses were taken into cordon, civilians were evacuated to safety,” the police said.
Mr. Kumar said two terrorists, who fired upon the search party, were killed in retaliatory firing. The police identified the slain militants as Muzamil Ahmad Mir from Chatripora, Shopian, and Shariq Ayoob, from Amshipora. An AK 56 rifle, a pistol and ammunition were recovered.
