The tragic event unfolded at Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart, where a gunman opened fire around 5:30 p.m., as reported by the Elkhart Police Department.

Upon receiving a distress call, officers and first responders swiftly arrived at the scene to find two individuals fatally shot inside the store. The shooter was later engaged by police outside the supermarket, leading to a confrontation in which the suspect was shot and killed. Unfortunately, two Elkhart Police Department officers sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter.

Following the incident, one officer was treated and released from the hospital, while the other remained in fair but stable condition. Authorities have assured the public that there is no further danger posed by the situation.

This tragic event adds to the concerning trend of gun violence in the United States, with at least 20 mass shootings reported so far this year. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear as investigations continue under the leadership of the Elkhart County Homicide Unit, with support from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police.
