Two in hospital with 'potentially serious' injuries after crash drama in Gateshead

Two women have been rushed to hospital following a three-car smash this afternoon (December 14).

Northumbria Police confirmed the two women are still at Queen Elizabeth Hospital with “potentially serious” injuries after a crash at the Aycliffe Avenue junction on Leam Lane, Gateshead.

The stretch of road remains shut this evening while officers investigate the circumstances surrounding the huge crash.

“Shortly before 2pm today, we received a report of a three vehicle collision on Leam Lane,” a spokeswoman for the force said.

“Emergency services attended and two women were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, with potentially serious injuries. Enquiries into the collision are on-going and officers remain at the scene.”

A fire crew attended the scene along with North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), which sent multiple units.

“We dispatched two ambulance crews, one clinical team leader, a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and received support from our emergency services colleagues at Northumbria Police and the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service,” an NEAS spokesman said.

Photographs from the scene tonight show the devastation as at least one vehicle lays in the road with severe damage.
