Two iconic Scottish musicians celebrated in Hogmanay BBC documentary special

TWO of Scotland’s most accomplished musicians are to be celebrated in a special documentary programme this Hogmanay.

Saying goodbye to 2024 BBC ALBA will close the year with a programme focused on the life of the late Fergie MacDonald followed by a second documentary in the New Year about the Gaelic singer and actor Kathleen MacInnes.

The first hour-long documentary on the Ceilidh King, MacDonald, will air on December 31 at 9:30pm as it tells the story of his life and career, from his childhood in Moidart, west of Fort William, to the revolutionary introduction of the electric guitar into the cèilidh band lineup.

The programme will also feature a host of tributes from friends and families alongside musicians and even sports personalities as they celebrate and reminisce about MacDonald’s lifetime of filling dance halls across Scotland with cèilidh music.

Releasing an estimated fifty records across a prolific 60-year music career MacDonald’s legacy within Scotland’s traditional music scene will leave an “enduring influence on his peers”.

One musician who takes part in the programme is a founding member of the Scottish folk band Mànran, Gary Innes, who speaks fondly of “Ceilidh King” while sharing unseen footage from MacDonald’s final TV interview.

“Fergie is an integral part of the tapestry that is the Scottish traditional music scene,” Innes said.

“So many of today’s most successful traditional bands draw inspiration from his achievements and skill.

“He was a truly authentic character, and his music still plays in our hearts.”

On New Years Day at 9pm a second documentary will raise the curtain on Kathleen MacInnes’ life and career as recalls her memories ranging from her upbringing in South Uist, to performing in London’s West End alongside David Tennant in Macbeth.

Viewers will see MacInnes juggle her busy family life in Glasgow with her career down in London.

The documentary will follow MacInnes as she visits South Uist, where she meets family and friends who retell stories from her upbringing as she explores her musical and performing roots on the island.

Both shows will premiere on BBC ALBA and can be also watched on the BBC iPlayer.
