Two people have been hospitalised after a fire tore through a tenement building in Paisley in the early hours of today.
The blaze took hold at a property on Main Road just before 1am this morning near Ferguslie Walk and led to a “number of people” being evacuated.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were made aware of the blaze shortly before 1am.
Four fire trucks raced to the scene to extinguish the flames and they worked tirelessly throughout the night, eventually leaving with the area made safe, around 4am.
Paramedics escorted two people to the town's Royal Alexandra Hospital who had suffered from smoke inhalation.
Flames and smoke could be seen billowing from the street-facing windows of the first floor flat.
The fire subsequently damaged the exterior of the building and smoke damage can be seen all the way up to the fourth floor. A pile of rubble and broken glass littered the pavement below.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 00.43am on Friday, January 20 to reports of a dwelling fire in Paisley.
"Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the town's Ferguslie area, where crews worked to extinguish the fire.
"Firefighters left the area at 4am after extinguishing the fire and working to make the area safe.
"Two casualties suffering from slight smoke inhalation were taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital by paramedics."
Police closed the road off to traffic throughout the night and, as of this morning, it was still closed between Thomas Street and Ferguslie.
Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Police Division shared the following update on social media around 9am: “Road closure in Paisley due to house fire. The road is closed at Main Road, Ferguslie to Thomas Street.
“The following diversion is in place from Paisley towards Johnstone – Canal Street, Maxwellton Street, Maxwellton Road and to Thomas Street. No diversion for Johnstone towards Paisley.”
Police have said that there are no suspicious circumstances concerning the fire’s source.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1am on Friday, January 20, we were called to a report of a fire within a property in Ferguslie, Paisley. Officers attended to assist with road closures and a number of people were evacuated.
"Two people have been taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. There are no suspicious circumstances."
