Two horses die as crews battle barn fire

Two horses have died after a fire broke out a Merseyside farm during the early hours of the morning.

Crews were called out to Holiday Moss Farm off Muncaster Drive in Rainford at around 4.32am today ( Saturday) following reports of a fire. On arrival crews found a large metal barn was on fire.

The fire service confirmed that two horses sadly died in the fire. Two further horses have been released from a neighbouring stables safely to an adjacent field.

The fire also spread from the barn to a number of caravans which were parked up nearby. There are no reports of any human casualties so far.

Fire fighters used high pressure hoses to try and prevent the blaze spreading to other caravans and buildings in the area.

Six fire engines and an aerial appliance were sent to the scene, supported by two of the engines from Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service.

The incident is ongoing and the public have been advised to avoid the area.

UPDATE

A fuel tank is at the scene and crews have moved acetylene and propane gas cylinders away from the fire. Merseyside Police are in attendance and Higher Lane has been closed at the junction of Rookery Lane and Cross Pit Lane.

The fire service have advised residents to keep doors and windows closed and keep medication for existing conditions nearby. If any ill effects are felt dial NHS 111.
