Wednesday night's CONCACAF World Cup qualifier descended into farce as the US hosted Honduras in -17 degrees celsius.
Two players were taken off with hypothermia in the bizarre 3-0 win for the home side that saw the hosts go to extraordinary lengths in order to get the game on - bar playing the game in a state such as Florida where the temperature isn't dangerous to life.
The match was originally set to be playing in San Jose, California but was moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota, with the mercury dropping further during the game and as fans made their way home.
Equipment such as insole warmers and quarterback hand-warmer pouches of the kind used in American football were provided while most players were spotted wearing thick headcovers and snoods.
The heated dugouts had hot air pumped overhead and at feet level.
Juventus star Weston McKennie and Chelsea's Christian Pulisic bookended a Walker Zimmerman finish to deliver a big three points for the home side.
But the controversy continued after the final whistle. Even before he was forced to substitute both goalkeeper Luis Lopez and striker Romell Quioto, the Honduras manager Hernan Dario Gomez was furious.
"It's inconceivable that a power in every sense would bring you here to play a game and get a result," he said.
"The game hasn't started, but I can't wait for it to end. Because it's not for enjoying, it's for suffering."
US goalscorer Zimmermann said: "I don't think they wanted any part of that tonight.
"You could just tell coming out for warm ups, their starting 11 not coming out right after the half. As soon as we got that first goal, and especially the second goal, we felt like we were in really good form and in control of the game."
