Two construction workers from Guatemala were reported missing following the bridge collapse in Baltimore, as confirmed by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement released on Tuesday. One of the missing individuals is a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén, while the other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula.
According to the ministry, both workers were part of a team engaged in repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the tragic accident. Although the statement did not disclose the names of the missing workers, it mentioned that the Guatemalan Consul General in Maryland has been actively involved in providing support to the families of the affected individuals.
The consulate further stated that its consul general in Maryland is maintaining communication with local authorities and has confirmed that two of the missing workers were of Guatemalan descent. The collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge occurred early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship collided with one of the bridge's pillars.
As of now, six individuals, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead in the aftermath of the tragic incident. However, state and federal officials have refrained from releasing any information regarding the identities of the missing workers.
