Two girls rushed to hospital after eating metal pieces hidden in birthday cake

A father has blasted a cake maker who used pieces of metal to hold an ornamental cake together for a children's birthday party - which were then eaten by the kids.

The incident saw two girls, Maria Fernanda and her sister Renata, hospitalised after the fourth birthday party in the city of Monterrey, in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.

Their dad Oscar Velez has now demanded to know if anybody else had ever heard of pieces of metal being used in a children's birthday cake.

He said the kids had assumed everything in the cake was edible and they happily gobbled up the metal pieces before realising.

Speaking about the incident, he said: "How is it possible that someone who is dedicated to making cakes can put a piece of metal to hold a candy pearl on a base of fondant in the shape of a crown and, worse still, not tell us?

"Today my daughters took a bite of the cake, confident that everything in it was edible and that there was no reason to suspect it might contain a piece of metal.

"They gobbled it up and now there is metal in both of their stomachs. I attach the photo of the cake as it looked when it came and how the X-rays with the metal in my daughter's stomachs appear.

"We went from a day of joy for my Marifer (Maria Fernanda) to now keeping her under observation to make sure everything is okay, as we still do not know what will happen between now and tomorrow, when they take another X-ray.

"Parents, be careful with these types of cakes, as sometimes we don't realise that under every decoration, there may be something that can destroy the moment."

As of yesterday, the girls still had metal in their stomachs and were waiting for it to be passed out naturally.

Oscar has said his daughters were doing well.
