Liverpool have been linked with a number of exciting forwards in the past week, as Jurgen Klopp prepares to give his fading squad quite the makeover in the summer.
Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani and AC Milan hot-shot Rafael Leao have both been suggested as possible targets, but former Reds goalkeeper David James appears to be less keen on seeing big-name stars move to Anfield, preferring the more pragmatic approach by which Klopp has carved out his career.
And the ex-England international has also revealed that he has spoken to another former Anfield star about what needs to be done to get the Reds back on track.

Speaking to GGRecon, James said: “I had a conversation recently with Dirk Kuyt regarding how there’s a perception that the only way for a team to improve is by buying players. [Darwin] Nunez and [Cody] Gakpo have come in, Mo Salah has signed a new deal and Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino are back from injury.
"I would argue that Liverpool have enough forwards at the club already. You can get in a position where you can have too many talented, expensive forwards, where it doesn’t bode well for actual success on the pitch.
“Liverpool’s success in the past was not going out and being the biggest spenders, it was about getting players that people were surprised by as opposed to expecting, with those surprises turning out into top-drawer players. Liverpool’s success has been about recruiting lesser-known players and turning them into superstars and they should follow that model. If everybody knows about a certain player, then I don’t believe that would work for Liverpool.”
The Reds have enjoyed a sustained period of success under Klopp over the past six seasons, but the German is now faced with a rebuilding job after a enduring a poor 2022-23 season that has seen Liverpool lose their grip on both domestic cups and facing almost-certain elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid.
They are also struggling to qualify for next year's elite European competition, which could severely impact their hopes of landing much-needed midfield stars like Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, should they fail to finish in the Premier League's top four.
