Two popular foodhalls in Greater Manchester are to close tomorrow (July 19) amid the 'red warning' heatwave. Mackie Mayor in the city centre and Altrincham Market are closing their food and drinks halls to look after the welfare of their staff and customers alike, they say.
The popular food and drinks halls, as well as the Picturedome in Macclesfield, made the announcement on social media this morning, saying they would be reopen on Wednesday with a 'much more manageable temperature'. The outdoor market and New Market Square will remain open at the Altrincham site, with just the indoor food and drinks area closed.
Mackie Mayor, on Eagle Street in Ancoats, posted on their Instagram: "STAY COOL.. Due to the mad temperatures predicted on Tuesday (19th) we’ve decided to close for the day.. for the welfare of our staff and customers. Sorry for the inconvenience but don’t worry.. we’ll be back to normal on Wednesday with a much more manageable temperature."

Since it opened in 2014, Altrincham Market has transformed the centre of Altrincham into a destination for eating and drinking, with spin-off markets and a host of other operators heading to the town, from the likes of Sugo and Blanchflower to tapas restaurant Porta. Mackie Mayor followed in 2017, and the Picturedrome in 2019.

The market halls pour beers from Manchester brewers Blackjack and West Didsbury founded Reserve Wines as well as coffee and cocktails from Lancaster's Atkinson's Coffee Roasters. There is also a wide range of food from more local businesses including meat from Tender Cow, pizza from Honest Crust, and Mexican from Picos Tacos.
