Edinburgh tower block of student flats planned for Leith waterfront

Further student accommodation is being considered for a large brownfield site in the north of Edinburgh.

Proposals for two multi-storey buildings have been brought forward by developer S Harrison Developments and local residents as well as businesses will be able to share their thoughts on the plans at Ocean Terminal on Tuesday March 7 between 2-7pm.

The ‘new and improved’ proposals will look to create a residential-led development at the Ocean Point 2 in Leith will be shown at the consultation.

Those behind the plans say that it will go towards transforming the Leith waterfront and bring “vibrancy to the area.”

The project, which will not only introduce purpose built student accommodation, will also look to create new homes as well as space for commercial and community use.

The site of the potential development will neighbour Ocean Point 1 which is home to VisitScotland.

A spokesman for the firm said: “In addition to delivering new homes, student accommodation is also being explored with students delivering significant spending power locally and bringing a future skilled workforce to an area which has witnessed little purpose-built student accommodation.

“Edinburgh is a university city, and the number of students in higher education has risen by almost a third since the start of the century, with purpose-built student accommodation having the potential to free-up much needed family homes currently occupied by students locally.”

There is hope that the new proposed development will be part of a massive regeneration of the area with Ocean Terminal undergoing an extensive refurbishment.

The tramlines will also start to operate from June 2023 which should mean travellers should be able to reach the city centre in 20 minutes.

Those behind the plans say that the student housing will bring income and future professionals to the area.
