Images shared on Traffic Scotland's Twitter feed appear to show vehicles tailed back for miles as emergency services dealt with the fallout of the crash.

Motorists can be seen queueing back to Hermiston Gait with the road closed for around 40 minutes on Tuesday, June 13. Lanes were reopened shortly after 5pm but traffic is continuing to move slowly in the area.

The congestion is so bad that traffic is beginning to back up onto the M8 and that drivers were experiencing delays of up to an hour as of 6.10pm.

One eyewitness reported seeing motorists leaving their vehicles due to the severe delays that have taken place in scorching temperatures.

They said: “I saw stationary traffic which had strategically parted to let an emergency service vehicle up the centre and drivers walking about the carriageway surrendering to the fact that they were going nowhere."

Massive lines of motorists can be seen tailing back along the bypass from Dreghorn to Hermiston Gait.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 4.10pm on Tuesday, 13 June, to a report of a two vehicle crash on the A702 Edinburgh city bypass, eastbound, near the Dreghorn junction.

“Emergency services attended and two people, the drivers, were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“The road was closed and re-opened around 5.25pm.”
