The road was subsequently closed between the B1334 (North Seaton Roundabout, North Seaton) to Brock Lane (East Sleekburn) with delays reportedly affecting traffic heading towards Newcastle from Newbiggin.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police confirmed that their officers had attended the scene where the drivers were found injured.

The force said both drivers were taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries but the ambulance service said just one patient was transported to hospital.

They said: “Shortly before 1.45pm today we received a report of a collision on the A189 southbound at East Sleekburn involving two cars.

“Officers and emergency services attended the scene and both drivers, an 84-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman were taken to hospital for suspected minor injuries.

“Both vehicles have been recovered but one lane remains closed and there is heavy traffic in the area."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "One of our scheduled car crews came across a road traffic collision on the A189 at 1.49pm.

"A double crewed ambulance was dispatched to the scene.

"One patient was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital and we transported another home as they didn't require more treatment."
