Two dead in shooting as trouble breaks out at late-night Honolulu cock fight

Two people have reportedly died following a shooting during an altercation at a late-night cock fight in Hawaii.

Five people were shot in Honolulu, with police being called to the scene just after midnight on Friday, April 14.

According to KHON-TV, police spent Saturday, April 15, searching for a suspect believed to be in his 20s.

Honolulu Police Department Lieutenant Deena Thoemmes told KOHN: "At the end of the fight a group of males started arguing and then it escalated to a physical alteration, at some point gun shots were fired hitting five people who were in the immediate area."

Police confirmed a 59-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man were pronounced dead after arriving at hospital.

Three men, aged 38, 40, and 57, were treated for gunshot wounds but later released from hospital.

Police have said the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear.

Lt Thoemmes said: "I don't understand the circumstances from this, it could have stemmed from something totally different and they just happeend to be in the same area at the same time."

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the police department said the five victims managed to get themselves to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center before two were pronounced dead.

Cock fighting is illegal in 50 US states, but continues in some, including Hawaii, where fights can draw in hundreds of people.

At the start of March, police arrested four people following another illegal cock fight in Hawaii which drew a crowd of more than 800 spectators.
