Two people have died after being pulled from the water off a popular holiday spot in eastern Victoria.

The male and female were brought to shore at Bastion Point in Mallacoota about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics attended but the pair died at the beach. No further details have been released on what happened or the identities of the deceased.

The beach is near Victoria's border with NSW and next to Main Beach, which known to have rips.

There were no lifeguard patrols at Bastion Point on Wednesday, according to Surf Life Saving Australia's Beachsafe website.

"Standing on Bastion Point, you can see waves breaking over the bar up to several hundreds of metres out to sea," the website states.

"Local knowledge and experience are required to successfully cross the bar."

At least 64 people have drowned in Australia this summer, according to Royal Life Saving Australia.

A man aged in his 60s and another in his 70s died earlier in the week after being pulled from the water in separate incidents at beaches in NSW.
