Two cyclists killed in hit-and-run were father and son, 45 and 16, as tributes pour in

Two cyclists killed in a hit-and-run were father and son, police have confirmed.

It is believed both Dean Jones, 45 and Lewis Daine, 16, were struck by a red Volkswagen Golf around 9pm in the Cudworth area of Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Emergency services were called and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed the driver in the vehicle responsible failed to stop and left the scene.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in a neighbouring village.

When the pair failed to return home that night Lewis’s worried mum put a message on Facebook asking if anyone had seen them both.

She is now being supported by South Yorkshire Police officers.

Lewis's cousin, Samantha Earnshaw, told ITV News: "He's the most loving boy. He's a very big loss, big big loss. I'd do everything to have him back here with us, everything."

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but he has now been released and has been eliminated from police enquiries.

Pals paid tribute to Lewis with one saying “Can’t believe u both gone. Not gunna be the same without you round. You will always have a piece in my heart.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Our roads policing group are continuing to appeal for information and any dash cam footage that could help with the investigation.
