Two contestants have been eliminated from The Masked Singer in a double unmasking ahead of next week’s semi-final.
None of the ITV show’s judging panel of Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama, Mo Gilligan and Davina McCall was able to identify artist Sir Grayson Perry as Kingfisher, or singer Andrea Corr of The Corrs as Snail, as they left the show.
Ross and McCall had suspected that Kingfisher, who sang Nancy and Frank Sinatra’s Something Stupid, was comedian Joe Lycett, while Jama thought it was X Factor judge Simon Cowell, and Gilligan thought it could be comedian Harry Hill.
After taking off his mask, Sir Grayson told Gilligan he was “playing along” with his guess, adding that he was “doing my Harry Hill impression with my body”.
Before leaving the show, the 64-year-old, best known for his pottery creations, told the audience: “I’ve had a lovely time, the whole experience.
“When I’m normally here on stage I can’t hear, I can’t see, I can’t even scratch my nose. The shock for me taking the head off is seeing you lot. I embraced the spirit of the show.”
Gilligan told him: “You were so good and the way you captivated people is what The Masked Singer is really about, so you played the game.”
For Snail, Gilligan thought it was Jane McDonald behind the mask as she “sailed the seven seas, while McCall thought it was Melanie Blatt of pop group All Saints, Jama suggested singer Corrine Bailey Rae, and Ross guessed it was Sugababes singer Heidi Range.
When Corr, 50, removed the mask, Ross shouted: “I was a huge Corrs fan, I can’t believe I didn’t get that.”
Corr, who sang Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night, told him that he “got my record right, but the wrong person” referring to Ross’s guess that she was Range because of a reference to the song Ten Feet High, mistaking Range as the singer of the track.
Before leaving the show, the Irish singer said: “I’ve had such a good time everybody has been so lovely. It’s been really joyous.
“Also I wanted to do it for my children and my nieces and nephews and friends and just for the laugh.”
Wolf, Bush, Pufferfish, Dressed Crab and Bear made it through to the show’s semi-final.
The Masked Singer, hosted by Joel Dommett, continues on Saturdays on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player.
Harriet Rose hosts The After Mask on ITVX and YouTube: The Masked Singer UK.
