Indianapolis Colts’ defensive backs coach Ron Milus and linebackers coach Richard Smith will not be returning for the 2025 season, according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder.
These moves come on the heels of the Colts releasing defensive coordinator Gus Bradley earlier in the week as the team begins its search for a new defensive coordinator.
Milus has an extensive background when it comes to coaching the secondary, getting his start with Washington during the 1993 season. He has been with the Colts since 2022 when Bradley was brought in.
Smith has also been with the Colts since 2022 and held that position previously with the Chargers from 2017-2020 and with the Raiders in 2021. Smith was also the Falcons defensive coordinator for two seasons.
The issues that the Colts experienced on the defensive side of the ball falls on everyone. As Chris Ballard said on Friday, he didn’t create enough competition on the roster, it’s also up to the players to execute the gameplan, and ultimately, Gus Bradley is the one who has to shoulder the responsibility of this unit the play-caller and game-planner.
From the sounds of it, the rest of the defensive coaching staff will remain in place for the time being and once a new defensive coordinator is hired, he will then make those decisions on whether he wants to bring in his own staff members or retain any of the current coaches.
