Two Colts’ CBs among best in PFF’s coverage metric in Week 7

In recent weeks, Pro Football Focus has introduced a new metric called lockdown percentage, and in Week 7, two Indianapolis Colts cornerbacks ranked among the best in this category.

In short, as the name suggests, this metric measures how well a defender prevents a receiver from getting open.

At No. 9 on PFF’s Week 7 ‘Lockdown Report’ was the Colts’ Jaylon Jones, and at No. 13 was Kenny Moore. Jones had a lockdown rate of 71.43 percent, and Moore was at 66.67 percent.

Even when targeted, both cornerbacks gave up very little to the Miami Dolphins passing game. Jones allowed two receptions on three targets for a grand total of six yards, along with recording a pass breakup.

Moore, meanwhile, surrendered only one reception on four targets for a total of two yards with a pass breakup of his own.

Moore’s passer rating when targeted was only 39.6 and Jones’ was 70.1.

One of the more impressive aspects from this Colts’ team on Sunday was that the Dolphins’ dynamic duo of Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill had barely any production in this game.

Combined, Hill and Waddle had just four targets, two receptions, and 19 total receiving yards.

Keep in mind that this was a pass defense that only a few weeks ago, gave up over 1,000 combined passing yards in consecutive weeks to the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Of course, the Dolphins not having Tua Tagovailoa was certainly a factor, but I also would have thought that there would have been a more concerted effort by Miami to get the ball into the hands of Waddle and Hill.

Although not on PFF’s rankings, Sam Womack had a good day as well, allowing one catch on two targets for 13 yards.
