Two public car parks in the city will be closed for several years from next month to allow for the construction of the light rail to Woden.
One car park on the corner of London Circuit and Constitution Avenue and a second car park at 41-51 Marcus Clarke Street will be closed for the establishment of construction site compounds.
The car parks will be used for site offices, storage, construction parking and utility installation, with signs installed in coming weeks.
An ACT government spokesperson said a project team was currently engaging with the community about these compound locations.
Update on timing, impacts and any further changes would be provided in coming weeks, they said.
The car park closures follow warnings sounded this week over the potential for Canberra's second light rail stage to create massive commuter disruption, with Commonwealth Avenue flagged for an 80 per cent reduction in its traffic capacity.
A disruption taskforce has recently been established, with ACT Transport Minister Chris Steel calling on commuters to rethink their routes.
A senior lecturer in transport management at the University of Sydney has previously told The Canberra Times the light rail project could be transformative for residents commuting habits.
