Two young children remain in hospital a week after being hit by a bus outside a Welsh primary school. The incident happened at the end of the school day last Monday, May 23, on a lane outside the primary school in the village of Llanfair Caereinion, about eight miles west of Welshpool.
The crash led to a huge response from the emergency services, including officers from Dyfed-Powys Police, paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service and crews from Wales Air Ambulance. You can get the latest WalesOnline newsletters emailed to you directly for free by signing up here.
There were no passengers on the school bus at the time of the crash, but five children in total were injured along with the adult male driver of the bus. One child was treated at the scene and did not need further treatment, but three of the children were airlifted in Wales Air Ambulance helicopters to hospital, while a fourth child and the driver were taken to hospital by road ambulance. Police described their condition last week as “stable”.

On Monday - a week after the crash - two of the children remain in hospital. The other two have now been released into the care of their parents while the bus driver has been discharged. Police, who have not commented on the scale of the injuries sustained by the two children still in hospital, continue to appeal for information relating to the collision, which saw a part of the area - which is also near a secondary school - cordoned off for hours as emergency services dealt with the incident and the bus was removed for forensic examination.
Sergeant Robert Hamer of Dyfed-Powys Police said: “The incident happened as school was finishing for the day and there were a lot of people picking up children at the time. We have already spoken to a number of witnesses and we are now asking that anyone else who was in the vicinity of the primary and secondary schools on Neuadd Lane, and may have witnessed the incident, to get in touch. We would especially appeal to anyone who was parked in the area, and may have dash-cam recordings of the incident, to contact us.”
