Two suspects have been charged with murdering a man who spent six years in a coma after being shot as a teenager.

Denzican Karadag, 28, and Jason Diur-Kota, 29, are accused of killing Joel Bempah-Cumberbatch who suffered significant brain damage following the incident in Wood Green, north London.

Mr Bempah-Cumberbatch was 18 when six shots were fired at him and a bullet passed through his head, just above his right eye.

He and his brother were confronted by suspects covering their faces who then fled on bicycles along Turnpike Lane at about 3.22pm on August 30, 2016.

Mr Bempah-Cumberbatch remained in hospital needing round-the-clock care and unable to communicate again. Sadly, he died aged 25 in Iver, Buckinghamshire on September 20, 2022.

In 2017, two men were convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 13 years, the Metropolitan Police said.

A force spokesman said: “Detectives from the Specialist Crime North submitted a further file to the Crown Prosecution Service.”

On Monday, Karadag, who gave his address as HMP Highpoint in Suffolk, and Diur-Kota, of Woodhill Prison, Milton Keynes, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court accused of murder.

They are next due at the Old Bailey on May 21 with a provisional trial date set for February next year.

An inquest will be opened next month in Beaconsfield.
