Two people have been charged after a truck in Hobart's northern suburbs that had made a round trip to Victoria was found laden with kilograms of illegal drugs — cocaine, cannabis and ice.
Police said the cocaine bust was one of the largest in Tasmania's history, with a street value for all the drugs between $700,000 and $1.2 million.
Police intercepted the logistics truck on the Brooker Highway at Glenorchy — about 270 kilometres from the Spirit of Tasmania's terminal in Devonport — and found 1.4kg of cocaine, 4.6kg of cannabis and 392g of ice in the cabin, they said.
A 60-year-old man from Brighton and a 58-year-old man from Elderslie have been charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and were set to appear before Hobart Magistrates Court today.
"As part of a planned investigation, police yesterday seized one of the largest quantities of cocaine ever in Tasmania's history," Acting Commander Natasha Freeman said.
Acting Commander Freeman said police worked closely with the Spirit of Tasmania ferry service and others "to ensure that our sea, air and mail corridors are not exploited by those wanting to profit from drug distribution".
Police investigations into the bust are ongoing.
