Two Cardiff care homes could close after fall in number of residents

Two care homes in Cardiff could be set to close after seeing a significant fall in the number of residents in their care. A joint statement from Cartref Care Homes and Cardiff Council has revealed that a period of talks will open on proposals to close Cartref's Station Road care home in Llanishen and its Lake Road East home in Roath.

The statement says that a series of sustained challenges experienced by Cartref has seen occupancy levels fall to 50%, making the running of their homes very difficult. Both care homes will remain open until the process of exploring their futures is complete.

The joint statement from Cartref and Cardiff Council states: "Cartref is a respected Charity which offers an affordable, yet excellent provision for residents and has successfully operated two care homes in Cardiff for seven decades. Due to a number of factors, Cartref has experienced a series of sustained challenges resulting in occupancy levels having falling to 50%. This significant fall in the number of residents has made the running of the home very difficult.

“A great many ways to address the situation have been explored and specialist advice has been provided. Due to the age, layout and design of the homes located at Lake Road East and Station Road, these options have sadly not been viable. It is therefore with deep regret, that the Trustees have made the difficult decision to commence a 45 day period of consultation on proposals to close both care homes. This will be a cautious and carefully managed process and until completion, both care homes will remain open.

“The safety and wellbeing of residents and staff is a priority and discussions with staff, residents and families will be ongoing. Support has been put in place for all those who are potentially impacted by the plans. Cartref, Cardiff Council, the Health Board and Care Inspectorate Wales will work together proactively, to explore future alternative and suitable provision for all residents and in the event of closure, their transition will be carefully and sensitively managed.”
