Two buses crash in city centre as traffic lights go out at busy junction

Two buses crashed into each other on a busy city centre road earlier today.

London Road in Liverpool city centre was brought to a standstill as an Arriva bus crashed into the back of a double decker. The road was closed in both directions for several hours as a result.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, traffic lights nearby on New Islington were not functioning around the time of the crash. It is not yet clear if there were any injuries.

Pictures taken at the scene show a single decker Arriva bus with a badly smashed windscreen. It was displaying a "not in service" message on the front.

Just ahead of the bus was a double decker Arriva bus. The back window of the double decker could be seen collapsed into the back of the bus.

The road was reopened at around 2.30pm, and the traffic lights now working, according to Inrix. Merseyside Police have been approached for comment.
