Two Bristol takeaways slammed for poor food hygiene ratings

Two food takeaways in Bristol have been handed low ratings for food hygiene including no stars at all for one business.

Asia Garden, of Oxford Street in Totterdown, has been told "urgent improvement" is necessary after a recent inspection of their restaurant on January 8, 2022 left them with no stars.

Bristol Live has approached Asia Garden for a response regarding its hygiene rating.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) found that "urgent improvement" was necessary for the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building.

It also stated that "major improvement" is required for both hygienic food handling and management of food safety.

Asia Garden is a popular takeaway that has been serving traditional Chinese cuisine in Bristol for more than a decade.

It has acquired a 3.5 customer satisfaction rating on Trip Advisor from a total of 30 reviews at the time of writing.

Another takeaway outlet in the city centre has also been given a low rating, with Matina achieving just one-star for their food hygiene.

They have been awarded "good" for two categories: hygienic food handling and cleanliness and condition of facilities and building.

It was for management of food safety where "major improvement" is necessary according to the report on the FSA website.

Matina was approached for comment by Bristol Live.

The Middle Eastern grill based in the Glass Arcade has a 4.9 rating on Google based on 376 reviews and is placed as the number one food outlet in Bristol under the quick eats category.

Matina specialises in freshly baked Kurdish naan bread filled with your choice of grilled meats and vegetables.

The FSA describes the management of food safety as: “System or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in the future.”

Businesses have a right to reply to their ratings from the FSA and can apply for a re-inspection or appeal the decision.
