The building was commissioned by Thomas Hamilton in 1895, and it was the first building in Scotland to have a pneumatic elevator and hot and cold water in every bathroom, setting the benchmark in luxurious hospitality.

The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) used the building exclusively when he stayed and many famous celebrities also visited including Mary Astor, Douglas Fairbanks, Rudyard Kipling and Bing Crosby.
