Two bed cottage for sale on a colourful hidden street in Mumbles

With the development of masonry paint over the years to a point where almost any shade of a variety of colours are available, the increase in the development of pretty properties lining now colourful streets has increased noticeably, and the world is a happy place for it.

There are the obvious locations that could arguably be partially credited for the explosion of streets of colourful Welsh houses as they have been boasting pretty property facades for years.

Tenby and Aberaeron are the probably the most instantly recognisable examples, but you don't have to be living in a landmark coastal location to get the paint brush out and spread some joyful colour.

Elm Street in Cardiff is a city example of residents of a road leaving white and cream in the past and letting colour be the present and future. Read how this unassuming street became one of the most well-known in the capital and what it's like living in a colourful house here.

But not all colourful roads have caught the attention of the wider population, or maybe even the majority of the residents living around it, and maybe that's the case for this hidden gem in the popular coastal town of Mumbles called Tichbourne Street.

This delightful road is packed with cute cottages with stone front garden walls and classic terrace facades, the majority of which now grab attention with shades of blue, green, pinks and grey. Even those with more modest colour choices for their rendering have chosen distinctive front doors or window frames to ensure their home can claim to be distinctive too.

The only potential downside to becoming a beacon of beautiful colour is that sometimes that translates to becoming a beacon for Instagrammers looking for a visually appealing photo for their account. The owner of one pink house in Cardiff has even seen these 'influencers' pretending to live at her pretty pink home. Find out more about that here.

But this terrace of colourful houses won't be subjected to any passing photo sessions as they are located on a hidden street that is a tiny, single track lane that climbs the hill accompanied by its charming cottages to another small, dead end lane at the top called Bryn Terrace and views of the waters of Swansea Bay at the bottom.

It's a hidden place to call home, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the thriving location of Mumbles that centres around the seashore promenade and the centre that can boast a variety of independent shops and eateries, as well as national chains.

With Swansea in one direction and the glorious Gower peninsula beaches in the other direction, surely not many people from the area or who have visited Mumbles were surprised when property portal Rightmove announced in November 2022 that the town was, at that time, Britain's top house price coastal hotspot. Find out more about that here.

More recently, Rightmove states that Mumbles has seen prices increase by 7% on the previous year and 14% up on the 2018 peak of £328,275, with an overall average price increasing to £375,702 over the year to July 2022.

The majority of sales around Mumbles in the year to July 2022 were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £312,686. Flats sold for an average of £251,217, with detached properties fetching £612,589. Although it is a small street with fewer than 20 houses, Tichbourne Street has seen only one sale in the last two years to July 2022 and four in the last five years.

Now a pretty blue mid terrace cottage has come onto the market as a chance for a potential buyer to join this colourful street in this cutest of locations. The tour starts with an elevated front garden that is surely crying out for a bench tucked under the living room window so the view of the sea can be achieved and enjoyed.

The front door opens into a small vestibule entrance porch that is a good idea, stopping anyone sitting in the open-plan reception room letting a blast of cold air and yet small enough and built at an angle in the corner so that it does not take up a huge amount of floorspace.

The front of the house has an open-plan lounge diner that you were probably expecting and it's a bright and light area for dining, socialising and relaxing that flows into the rear kitchen via a set of double glass doors. The kitchen continues the feeling of space and airiness, helped by a large picture window looking out over the sunny rear terrace.

The kitchen can easily welcome a breakfast table and chairs so more sociable group dining can occur in this space too and there's a back door that can be thrown open to invite the sea breezes to join the meal at the table too. Maybe just simply changing this door to a stable door would increase the connection to the garden on a more regular basis plus add even more character to the space.

The rear garden is surprisingly spacious considering this home is a cottage on a tiny lane, and there's even more options for sociable dining, this time alfresco, and ample space for a handy shed too, as well as direct access to the rear lane.

Up the stairs in the lounge and two double bedrooms await and obviously there are going to be arguments over who gets the largest one at the front that can also boast a sea view, but the rear bedroom can tempt you too with a peaceful location at the back of the home and flooded with light.

The first floor bathroom is a very spacious renovation that has created a four-piece suite that includes a corner bath and a built-in, walk-in shower. The interior design in the bathroom reflects the rest of the property - simple, inviting, neutral decor that leans heavily on natural materials such as wood and ceramic, white and cream tones with the occasional accent colour.

Being sold with no chain, the colourful cottage can be left as an oasis of calm shade or the new owner may be inspired by the colourful facades that are now beginning to dominate the streetscene and splash some stronger tones to get the internal colourful party started.

The pretty blue cottage is on the market for offers over £350,000 with estate agent Astleys, call their Mumbles branch on 01792 369139 to find out more.
