Two Ayrshire railway stations to benefit from new CCTV cameras as ScotRail beef up security

Two railway stations in Ayrshire are to benefit from the installation of new CCTV cameras.

Girvan and Prestwick Town stations will both see the equipment installed as ScotRail beef up their security.

The shake-up is part of ScotRail’s plans to improve security at scores of stations across the country.

And Scotrail say the installation of new cameras at Prestwick Town and Girvan are part of a “wider project” which will see 60 stations upgraded with the latest technology CCTV cameras.

The new cameras instantly alert CCTV operators when virtual perimeters have been "breached" which will help ScotRail identify vulnerable people and reduce fatalities on the railway, as well as crime.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail's head of customer operations, said: “CCTV and station Help Points are hugely important in making sure the railway is a safe environment for everyone who uses it.

“The installation of new state-of-the-art CCTV cameras at Prestwick and Girvan will provide enhanced coverage at the stations, help identify vulnerable people, as well combatting crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We believe these improvements will give our customers more reassurance and confidence when they travel by rail.”

Planning permission for the installation of CCTV cameras at both stations was sought by ScotRail and approved by South Ayrshire Council.

Girvan Railway Station is a category B-listed building which was constructed in the Art Deco style in 1946.

Four new cameras will be installed at Girvan, while the C-listed Prestwick Town railway station will see the installation of four replacement CCTV cameras and the installation of three additional ones.
