Authorities in Dover have announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with the tragic killing of 18-year-old Camay Mitchell De Silva, who was fatally shot last month at the dorms of Delaware State University. The incident occurred during an altercation between two groups of men on campus, where De Silva, who was not a student at the university, was visiting a friend.
The suspects, Destry Jones, 20, and Damien Hinson, 18, have each been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, and firearm-related charges. Both individuals are not affiliated with the university and are currently in custody.
The shooting took place in the early hours of April 21, with officers responding to reports of gunshots on campus. De Silva was found with a gunshot wound to her head and succumbed to her injuries despite being rushed to a nearby hospital.
According to investigators, Jones and Hinson were engaged in a physical altercation with two other men outside a dormitory, which escalated into gunfire that tragically claimed De Silva's life. Authorities have stated that De Silva was not involved in the altercation and was not the intended target of the gunfire.
Dover Police Chief Thomas Johnson Jr. expressed condolences to De Silva's family and emphasized the importance of bringing the perpetrators to justice to begin the healing process. Jones, who was apprehended in New York, is awaiting extradition, while Hinson, arrested in Dover, is currently in custody with bail set at over $3 million.
The arrests of Jones and Hinson mark a significant development in the case, shedding light on the events that led to the senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a young woman with a promising future ahead.
