Two arrested after taxi driver 'grabbed from behind' and robbed by passengers

Two men have been arrested after a taxi driver was forced to pull over, before being 'grabbed from behind' and robbed in Oldham.

The driver sustained injuries during the incident, which took place shortly after midnight on Wednesday (March 29) on Springfield Lane in Royton, Oldham. His passengers took his earnings for the night and some work equipment, before making off on foot.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say two men, both in their twenties, are in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of robbery. The driver's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police say there is 'no place' for these kinds of incidents, and are asking members of the public to come forward with any information.

In a statement, GMP said: "Two men have been arrested on suspicion of robbery following an incident in Oldham. Shortly after midnight today (Wednesday 29 March), a taxi driver was forced to pull over before being grabbed from behind by his passengers on Springfield Lane, Royton.

"The driver was hurt during the incident, although the injuries he sustained are not believed to be life threatening. His earnings for the night and some of his work equipment were then taken. The passengers then made off on foot. Two men, both in their 20s, are currently in police custody. Investigations are ongoing.

"Sergeant Matthew Adshead, of GMP’s Oldham division, said: 'Our officers are determined to keep the community safe, and I hope that these arrests show that there is no place for these sorts of acts on our streets.

“These sorts of incidents are always investigated thoroughly, and we are determined to ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions.'
