An investigation is currently underway following the tragic deaths of two Arizona women who were found shot to death in an overturned vehicle on a dangerous stretch of highway in northern Mexico. The victims, aged 72 and 82, were identified as dual citizens of the U.S. and Mexico, originally from Caborca, Mexico.
The attorney general's office for the state of Sonora revealed that a stolen Ford F-150, an AK-47, and ammunition believed to be connected to the murders were discovered by investigators from the Mexican National Guard and the army. Security forces from multiple government levels have launched an operation to locate and apprehend the criminal group responsible for this heinous act.
Sonora, particularly the Sonoyta-Caborca highway, has a history of violence and trafficking of migrants. In recent incidents, a California student conducting horticulture research in Sonora was found shot seven times in an SUV in June 2023. Additionally, in December, two U.S. residents and one U.S. citizen were targeted by gunmen while traveling on a highway in Sonora, resulting in the death of one individual.
Notably, Sonora was previously under the control of the notorious drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, who was apprehended in 2016 and is currently serving a life sentence in Colorado. Despite his capture, three cartels continue to engage in conflicts within Sonora, contributing to the region's ongoing security challenges.
