Two 18-year-old men have been charged with murder in the killing of former “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor. Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada were each charged on Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. District Attorney George Gasón expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the talented young actor, emphasizing the impact of Wactor's untimely death.
The men, along with two co-defendants, were arrested last Thursday and were scheduled to be arraigned on Monday afternoon. It remains unclear if any of them have legal representation at this time. The charges against Barceleau and Estrada include murder, grand theft, and attempted robbery, with Barceleau facing special circumstances that could result in a life sentence without parole upon conviction.
Wactor was fatally shot while interrupting thieves attempting to steal the catalytic converter from his car on May 25. The incident occurred as he was leaving work at a downtown LA rooftop bar with a coworker. The suspects allegedly shot Wactor without provocation during the theft, leading to his tragic death.
Leonel Gutierrez, identified as a third individual involved in the crime, faces charges of grand theft and attempted robbery, while Frank Olano has been charged as an accessory after the fact.
Following Wactor's death, a group known as “Justice for Johnny” has been advocating for a more aggressive approach to combating crime in the city. The group held rallies urging swift action in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for Wactor's murder.
LAPD Interim Chief Dominic Choi highlighted the relentless pursuit in the challenging case, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to bring justice for Wactor. Mayor Karen Bass echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of taking decisive action to enhance public safety in the city.
Barceleau is currently held without bail, while Estrada's bail has been set at just over $1 million.
