After some speculation and even concern that LeBron James may leave the Los Angeles Lakers next summer in free agency, he agreed to a two-year extension to remain with the team through the 2024-25 season.
That means that James will be in the Purple and Gold through his age 40 campaign.
There have been a sizable number of Lakers fans who have wanted him gone as soon as possible, while others want him to stick around since he represents by far the team’s best chance of returning to elite status.
Fan reactions on Twitter to James’ new deal ranged from unhappiness to gratitude.
Is it true that @KingJames just signed for 2 more years for @Lakers? Can he get another championship?! …

On @KingJames’ extension: The sad part is, I don’t know if his time with @Lakers will be more of a stain on his career or a stain on Lakers history. I guess we will find out over the next three years. #NotMyKing #NBA #Lakers #LebronJames #NBAFreeAgency #Lakers4Life #KobeBryant

Wondering how much @KingJames generated. What’s the correct multiplier? x2? x4? x10? #NBA #superstar #LeBronJames
Can @Forbes give an estimate? https://t.co/kG6mptRi6o— GilSoChill (@gil2chill) August 17, 2022
Brah he’s not gonna win a championship w all those resources used on a 40 yr Lebron. As a Laker fan, pains me to say a championship will be far more tough w that costly contract

With his new 2-year/$97.1M deal at Lakers, LeBron James' career earnings are more than half-a-billion dollar.
From 2003 to 2025, James earns $528,992,480 from his basketball contracts. The number doesn't include the deals w/ sponsorships, ads, etc.

LeBron James and a $97.1 million max extension 2- years with the #Lakers and I gotta tell ya… 37 years old, in the #NBA about 20 seasons and pushing off free agency until when he could play with his son Bronny. Man, it really IS good to be the KING! pic.twitter.com/IYDYneSBLS
