Twitter reacts as jockey Nina Carberry is crowned winner of Dancing with the Stars

Jockey Nina Carberry has been crowned champion of RTÉ's Dancing With The Stars competition alongside her pro partner Pasquale La Rocca.

Carberry was roundly praised for her performances throughout the series, and early on the judges had labelled her as the dark horse of the competition.

She saw off competition from Irish Paralympic athlete Ellen Keane as well as rugby sevens star Jordan Conroy and singer-songwriter Erica Cody to claim the competition's glitterball trophy.

Carberry was elated to have scooped the top prize and told of how it was her determination to improve that got her so far in the competition.

She said: "Just go for it, if you have a determination that you want to be good at something, if you put your mind to it you can do it.

"I was brutal at the start! Seriously, so if you have a will, there is a way."

Carberry had had the backing of her colleagues from the racing world ahead of the final.

Cheltenham hero Rachael Blackmore and legendary jockey Barry Geraghty had tweeted to their followers urging them to vote for Carberry in the finale.

Gold Cup winner Blackmore said: "Vote for Nina Carberry this Sunday, RTE One 6.30.

"Text Nina to 53125 when the voting lines open."

And two-time Irish Champion Jockey Barry Geraghty rowed in with his support too.

He said: "Now is the time to vote for Nina Carberry on Dancing with the Stars.

"Text NINA to 53125."

And viewers took to Twitter to react to her big win, praising the quality on show.

One said: "Brilliant finale! An impossibly high standard and great entertainment. Congratulations."

While another commented: "Congratulations Nina Carberry. You are fabulous."

And another viewer summed up how far Carberry had come considering she had no prior experience, while also crediting Conroy for his effort.

They said: Congratulations to Nina Carberry. She deserved it.

"She was the most consistent dancer over the last 12 weeks.

"Not bad considering she had no dancing experience prior to the show.

"On a side note, what a show dance by Jordan. He gave it his all & his arm was hanging off."
