When 20-year-old Lynette White was murdered in 1988, eyewitnesses placed a white man at the scene. Yet, 10 months later, five young black men were charged for the killing. Since the 1966 debut of his absurdist comedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, the playwright Tom Stoppard has been at the forefront of British theatre. With his latest play, Leopoldstadt, which references his grandparents’ deaths in concentration camps, he now tells his life story. AK
