Suranne Jones: Investigating Witch Trials

9pm, Channel 4

Suranne Jones is obsessed with the 17th-century witch trials that took place near her Greater Manchester home town, and is clearly moved as she follows in their footsteps to learn the wider history of witches (or rather, women) in this two-parter. From accusations of keeping nests of penises in trees to having orgies with the devil, there are some wild moments on the witchy curriculum – and a scene in which Jones howls with witchy musician Bat for Lashes is exhilarating. However, farmer James has a problem with some stubborn cattle who don’t seem to understand the importance of the event. Phil Harrison
