The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, 6 pm, BBC One (except Scotland)/iPlayer
The UK’s best-selling book of 2020 about a lost child trying to find his way home is brought to life in this beautiful film, which claimed both the BAFTA and Oscar for short animation. It features newcomer Jude Coward Nicoll as the voice of the boy who befriends three animals: a cake-loving mole (Tom Hollander), a wise horse (Gabriel Byrne) and a wary fox (Idris Elba), who share their experiences of life. It’s the on-screen equivalent of a gentle guiding hand and a big warm hug. You can see the documentary Charlie Mackesy: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, the Horse and Me earlier (4.15pm, BBC Two, times vary).

Ross Kemp: Deep Sea Treasure Hunter, 9 pm, Sky History/NOW
Following on from last year’s Shipwreck Treasure Hunter, ex-EastEnder and documentary-maker Ross is travelling further and diving even deeper for his latest show. To start, in a TV first, he’s exploring the wreck of King Henry VIII’s favourite warship Mary Rose, where he’s hoping to uncover lost relics and clues as to why the ship capsized so suddenly and inexplicably in 1545. So when Ross and his team of experts find timber that may be from the missing bow of the ship and some potential Tudor pottery, it’s an anxious wait to hear if they’ve discovered some important hidden treasures.

Masterchef, 8 pm, BBC One
Gregg Wallace and John Torode turn up the heat as the new—and 19th!—series of the cookery competition gets underway. Over the next eight weeks, 45 talented amateur cooks are whittled down to just one, who will be crowned MasterChef Champion 2023. However, first, they must make a good impression on Gregg and John’s taste buds. Tonight, the first batch of contestants’ opening task is to dish up a family favourite, with the aim of showing the seasoned judges just who they are as a cook. But with underdone chicken, curdled ice cream and some risky microwaving, the stakes have never been higher. Talk about pressure cooking! Continues Tuesday and Friday.

B&B By the Sea, 6.30 pm, BBC Two/iPlayer (box set)
Deborah Meaden is worlds away from Dragons’ Den when she’s transported to a unique coastal hideaway in this tranquil travelogue, first shown in Northern Ireland last December. Deborah is the first of 15 celebrities given a warm welcome (whatever the weather!) by B&B host Sharon McIlveen, Michelin-starred chef Alex Greene and driver Rory O’Kane. Other stars checking into the Victorian villa overlooking Downhill Beach on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast this week are Si King, Adam Woodyatt, Cerys Matthews and Ugo Monye. The star on top of the sandcastle: Derry Girls’ Granda Joe, Ian McElhinney, narrates. A hidden TV gem.

Best box set on TV tonight
Beef is a new 10-part comedy series about two people who collide after a road rage incident. This causes Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), a failing contractor with a chip on his shoulder, to go head-to-head with Amy Lau (Ali Wong), a self-made entrepreneur with a picturesque life.
Danny and Amy find their lives affected by this seemingly everyday encounter. With a great supporting cast on board too, this "edgy, smart, revenge fable" should be perfect binge-watch material.

Best film on TV tonight
Triangle of Sadness, Prime Video
Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s first English-language film, which was Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated, is a sledgehammer satire on power, wealth and misogyny. Models Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean (who died last year before the film’s release) use their influencer power to blag berths aboard a boat filled with the super-rich – naturally, things don’t go smoothly. Everything soon gets shaken up as boozy captain Woody Harrelson oversees this ship of fools, and a strong stomach may be needed when the elements come calling. With Östlund’s ability to create scenes that’ll have you cringing, this is a long, uncomfortable ride, but still makes its points – even if it uses blunt-force trauma to do so.
