Mr Loverman
9pm, BBC One
A beautiful adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s bestselling novel about a 74-year-old Caribbean immigrant who has been in a secret gay relationship for most of his life. Barrington “Barry” Walker (Lennie James) is a dapper, self-made man, who has a family with his wife Carmel (Sharon D Clarke). She knows her husband has been having an affair, but doesn’t know it is with his best friend Morris (Ariyon Bakare). Will Barry be able to live his truth within a conservative, judgmental community? The story unfolds over eight emotional, nuanced and sometimes very funny episodes: a Sunday lunch scene, with gags about Oxford one minute and cutting homophobia the next, is a great example. Alma’s Not Normal
10pm, BBC Two
More from Sophie Willan’s wonderful Bolton-set comedy, and a cancer diagnosis isn’t going to stop Grandma Joan (Lorraine Ashbourne) from dressing up in a leopard-print leotard and smoking ciggies at her hospital appointment. It’s Alma (Willan) who seems to be taking the news badly, so she tries to cheer herself up at a dating party – with some success. HR
