Based on the story of Mary Villiers – who schemed her way to the heart of the establishment by moulding her son, George, into bait for King James VI/I – this drama is a ribald romp through a scurrilous slice of 17th-century history. Julianne Moore is cunning and cutting as Mary, while Nicholas Galitzine is just the right combination of handsome and ingenuous as George. In this opener, Mary packs her reluctant son off to France to prepare him for high society. He returns just in time to make a big impression on Tony Curran’s decadent, indolent king. The sex and violence are turned up to 11 and the results are very entertaining. Phil Harrison
Sarah Everard: The Search for Justice

Much as the Metropolitan police have tended to point to single “bad apples”, the 2021 rape and murder of Sarah Everard by PC Wayne Couzens shone a light on a staggering level of systemic dysfunction within the Met. This documentary explores the case but also looks at the aftermath, including an independent inquiry into police practices. Everyone from Everard’s MP to the prosecuting barrister in the murder trial has a say. PH

Gripping, if hard to watch, action from the A&E department. This week’s biggest ouch: a teenager is rushed in after being struck in the eye during an archery class. More amusingly, joiner Chris has a work injury but nothing serious enough to stop him live-tweeting his hospital experience to his followers on social media. PH

Nathan Foad’s semi-autobiographical sitcom is a loving, irreverent tribute to his Nottinghamshire home town, and a chance for Morgana Robinson (Toast of London) to remind us of her brilliance. She plays Maxine, a newly divorced chip shop worker who isn’t about to let her son’s coming out upstage her 40th birthday party. Ellen E Jones

Peter McKenna’s tough, all-star Irish crime drama concludes with a series of cataclysms, but the script and cast both always seem to be in control of events. As the Kinsella family’s schisms widen, there’s much to keep you on the edge of your seat in this finely orchestrated finale. Jack Seale

Other People’s Children (Rebecca Zlotowski, 2022), 11:10pm, Film4
Good lord, the charm of this film. Rebecca Zlotowski in effect conjures up a sweet, sad, endlessly complicated romcom, about a four-year-old girl and her potential stepmother. Virginie Efira plays Rachel, a teacher aware that she may not be able to get pregnant. She meets and falls in love with a man who has a daughter and tries to insert herself into the child’s life, despite the constant presence of her mother. It is very charming but also wrenchingly sad – with a lot to say about the insecurity of step-parenthood – and a bittersweet ending that is one for the ages. Stuart Heritage
