TV star Aled Jones robbed of £17k Rolex in Chiswick

TV star Aled Jones was robbed of his £17,000 Rolex watch after being threatened by a teenager wielding a machete.

Songs of Praise presenter Jones, 52, was walking with 18-year-old son Lucas, when the armed youth approached him and demanded his watch on Chiswick Road in west London earlier this month.

The Welshman handed over the timepiece before safely returning to his home and calling the police, according to The Sun.

The Metropolitan Police said that a 16-year-old boy, who denies being responsible for the attack, has been charged with robbery.

Both ex-choirboy Jones and his son were left “shocked and shaken” by their ordeal which happened in broad daylight on July 7.

His wife of 22 years, Claire and the couple’s actress daughter Emilia, 21, were fortunately elsewhere. The Standard approached a representative for comment.

Jones is said to have been targeted for his Rolex Daytona - with the raid similar to those carried out by a “Rolex Ripper” gang in the same area 18 months earlier.

He previously spoke about his love of watches in an interview.

Jones, from Bangor, North Wales, became a star at 14 when in 1985 his version of Walking in the Air, from Christmas film The Snowman, reached No5.

By the time his voice broke aged 16, he had sold six million records and sang in front of the Pope, the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana.

Jones was made an MBE in 2013 for services to music and broadcasting and charitable services.

He is now a regular presenter of Songs of Praise and hosts a morning radio show on Classic FM.

Scotland Yard said officers received a report at around 5.40pm of a man who “had been approached by a male who threatened him with a machete and demanded his watch”.

Following an investigation by detectives a 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with one count of robbery.

A spokesman added: “The teenager has been bailed to appear at Wimbledon Youth Court for trial on August 24.”
