Turns Out We Might Be Heading Into One Of The Warmest Autumns On Record

warm summer autumn australia

If your electricity bills left you crying about this past doozy of a summer, let us be the first to share this — new data confirms Australian temperatures soared more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

TLDR; this past spring and summer turned the dial up, breaking records and pushing us into some pretty uncharted territory, climate-wise.

While the last six months have notched some pretty unprecedented numbers, the summer months look like they’re going to be just a fraction cooler than the all-time record, as reported by ABC News.

We’re still waiting on the final figures from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) but early calculations suggest the national mean temperature will land around 1.7 to 1.8°C above the long-term average. True climate nerds will know that’s up there with 2018/19 and 2019/2020 — years that really set the bar for extreme heat.

In fact, the first month of 2025 saw national maximums nearly 3°C hotter than usual

Our mates in Perth and Hobart were in for some scorchers, witnessing seventh and sixth warmest summers on record respectively. The rest of the capitals didn’t really fare too much better, with the summers ranking from 10th to 16th warmest.

On the rain front, the summer was all over the place. As reported by the ABC, Townsville copped an absolute soaking, with a tropical low dumping more than a metre of rain in 10 days. Meanwhile, Adelaide was left hanging, recording its driest summer since 1992.

It looks like it was a pretty wild contrast across the country, with some areas flooding while others watched their peace lilies wither. (Sorry, old friend).

Where do temperatures go from here?

You know we hate to be the bearers of bad news but it’s probably not significantly getting cooler any time soon.

BoM’s autumn outlook predicts temperatures are shaping up to be one of the three warmest autumns on record, per the ABC, suggesting a mean temperature more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for most of the country.

Unsurprisingly, climate change’s shaped up as the main culprit for this hot mess (no pun intended). While natural factors like La Niña usually bring milder summers, this time we’re seeing a warming atmosphere and scorching oceans take the lead.

Most of the states are slated for rainfall in the typical range for autumn and warmer than usual temperatures — except for Queensland, where autumn is likely to be drier than usual, except for southern and south-east areas.

Let’s just say, you might wanna stock up on those ice lollies and hit up that old mate with aircon, no judgements here!!
