Turn 11 annual leave days into 30 with remaining Bank Holidays in 2022

The June Bank Holiday has come and gone, and if you were one of the unlucky few who were working, you may be looking to book the next long weekend off.

If you’re smart about your using your annual leave allowances to the fullest, you can bag 30 days of holidays by booking just 11 days out of your annual leave for the rest of the year.

There are three bank holidays left in 2022, and all can be turned into a nice break away if you get in early enough.

So, to save you time, we have broken down how you can get a nice long break in August, an extra-long weekend in October, and a solid two-week holiday at the end of the year.

August

August hosts the next Bank Holiday on the Irish calendar, and with some great summer weather usually upon us that month, why not get the longest break possible out of your time off.

Here's how to do it: Book off Friday, July 29. With a bank holiday the next Monday, that'll give you four days in a row already. Then book off the Tuesday to Friday – August 2 to 5. With the weekend of August 6 and 7, it adds up to 10 days off in a row.

  • Days off: 10
  • Days booked: 5

October

October is the second last Bank Holiday of the year and falls on the 31st day of the month in 2022.

It’s a great chance to get the last break in before the busy run-up to the Christmas holidays. If you get in early, you can turn two annual leave days into a handy 5-day break.

Here’s how to do it: Book off Thursday, October 27, and Friday 28, then you’ll have the three-day weekend adding nicely onto those two days.

  • Days off: 5
  • Days booked: 2

December

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, with the St Stephen's Day bank holiday on Monday.

So, if you're clever, you can bag 15 days off for the price of four.

Here's how: Book off December 19-22, and you will have that whole week off, as most people get December 23 off already.

Then you'll have four days off in a row ahead of the usual Christmas break, and with most places returning to work after the bank holiday, you’ll be rested and recharged after 15 days off returning to work on January 3.

  • Days off: 15
  • Days booked: 4
