Turkey comes out on top for bargain booze in Europe

Seeking the cheapest holiday destination in Europe for a beer? Look no further than Turkey, with a pint of lager costing just £1.48 after the pound soared against the lira.

A study by holiday provider On the Beach has looked into the best getaways for bargain beer hunters and Turkey tops the list. As early as April this year, 37,000 Brits a week were flying into the country’s tourism hotspots and it is easy to see why, reports the Mirror.

Back in 2019, a pound could be exchanged for seven lira, but now that has rocketed to over 20. Around 2.5 million Brits jet to Turkey each year, with the resorts of Antalya, Dalaman, Izmir and Bodrum the most popular.

Hotel beds can be found for as little as £9 a night and a meal out at a basic restaurant can cost a pound, with a three-course meal in a mid-range restaurant setting you back a miserly £3 to £5.

The average price of a pint in Britain is £4.10 and well past £5 in parts of London. But pints are the most expensive in Scandinavia, with Norway at the top, charging £8 for the brew.

Zoe Harris, of On the Beach, said: “The cost of living in Turkey is incredibly low compared to the UK and with the pound becoming increasingly strong against the Turkish Lira it’s now one of most affordable holidays”.
